A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Mexico's most important cultural monuments — an 18th century neoclassical hospice whose central dome is covered by José Clemente Orozco's monumental fresco, considered one of the great works of 20th century painting. Mexico's artisan capital — a colonial town adjacent to Guadalajara where master craftspeople produce blown glass, talavera pottery, textiles and furniture that are exported worldwide. The pedestrian Calle Independencia is lined with galleries, workshops and restaurants in colonial buildings. Unmissable for design-conscious visitors.

The Jose Cuervo and Herradura distilleries offer tours, but smaller craft producers provide a more authentic experience. The train from Guadalajara (Jose Cuervo Express) makes this an elegant day excursion.
